SB's Take
  • Highly desirable supercharged version of Toyota's iconic roadster
  • Lightweight, driver-focused mid-engined layout
  • Retro looks and period-correct modifications

Toyota's MR2 (Midship Runabout 2-seater) launched to critical acclaim in 1984, designed to rival Bertone's X1/9. Lightweight, short in wheelbase and equipped with a revvy, motorsport inspired 4A-GE engine, the MR2 was an instant hit, delivering accessible performance and faultless reliability plus daily useability with two generous luggage compartments. Toyota then went on to launch a supercharged version, equipping the 4A-GE with a roots-type compressor, as pictured here. The supercharged MR2 offers genuinely lively performance to match the fabulous chassis, allowing keen drivers to adjust the car's attitude on the throttle and keep up with far more sophisticated machinery.

The MR2 (AW11) offers an incredible blend of raw driver focus and day to day usability. The NVH levels on cruise are fantastic for a car of this class owing to the aerodynamic glasshouse and the mid-engine layout allows for brilliant visibility out of the deeply cowled windscreen and windows. The frunk and boot offer genuine luggage capacity and the interior seats have enough adjustability for tall drivers, unlike many other mid-engine roadsters. The steering, which is completely unassisted, is light enough to comfortably manoeuvre at all speeds. Free of any mechanical intervention, it offers incredible feel and feedback, adding to the MR2's pure drivers appeal. The supercharged 4A-GE revs all the way out to 7,500RPM and carries with it an iconic engine note, having shared the 4A-GE base engine with Toyota's legendary AE86.

This example, like all factory supercharged models in the UK, is a Japanese import. As a result, the underside and bodywork presents in excellent condition, free of the corrosion that typically affects UK examples. It features some typical period correct modifications, with an aftermarket front bumper, stereo and speakers, plus a set of attractive light-weight Rays wheels. The MR2 is arguably one of the most definitive tools for UK B-roads ever produced, with its compact size, short gearing, high revving engine and adjustable chassis delivering pure driving joy at useable speeds. The car presents in appropriate condition for its age, giving buyers an opportunity to drive away in a genuinely useable sports car. As always, the seller is available to answer any questions. Buyers should bid with complete confidence.
